Darren Frank is very new to the world of Modern Art. In 2010, after battling alcohol and drug addiction for 25 years he started a new journey; one of recovery and discovery. In 2013, Darren discovered a buried talent for song writing that he hadn’t use in over 30 years, and loved the creative freedom it provided. In 2015, he tried his hand at painting. Having no background in paint, Frank used the same creative license channeled during song writing to teach himself to paint. He has used the last year to develop a technique of directly applying liquid acrylic paint to the canvas and then allowing to paint to flow together naturally and organically.
Having had no training and not studying art in anyway there are no rules that I have to follow except the ones I make for myself, and I love the freedom. Creation for me is a sacred thing it’s finding something out there in the nothingness and bringing it to life. No rules, just art. There’s nothing more freeing than that. He says of his current style of painting it’s like dancing on the edge of a cliff moving that canvas back and forth. Where beauty can turn to tragedy with one slip of the hand. But the rush of seeing the finished product smiling up at me is a true high.
